The University of Florida has a long and proud history in track and field. Many athletes who have competed for the Gators have gone on to represent Team USA in the Olympics. And even though there are now other powerhouse track and field programs across the country, Florida remains one of the top schools in the nation.

This past month, the Gators once again proved their dominance by winning both the men’s and women’s titles at the NCAA Track and Field Championships. In honor of this feat, let’s take a look back at Florida’s storied track and field history as well as consider where they’re headed next.

History of Track and Field Excellence at the University of Florida

The University of Florida has been a force to be reckoned with in track and field for many years. The men’s team was first organized in 1923, followed by the women’s team 50 years later in 1973, with both teams experiencing success over the years.

In fact, the Gators have won many NCAA team championships: 10 men’s championships (five indoor, five outdoor) and three women’s championships (two indoor, one outdoor). They’ve also produced numerous conference championships (28 combined), individual national champions, and Olympians. Nine Florida Gator athletes have earned at least one Olympic medal in track and field.

Florida Athletes Competed for Team USA in the 2020 Olympics

Several Florida Gators competed for Team USA at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Among them were:

  • Cory Ann McGee (women’s 1,500 meters)
  • Will Claye (men’s triple jump)
  • Marquis Dendy (men’s long jump)

Additionally, Grant Holloway (men’s 110m hurdles) took home a silver medal in his event, and Taylor Manson (4x400m relay mixed) took home bronze.

Along with those who participated as members of Team USA, many Florida athletes also represented their home countries in the Olympics:

  • Doneisha Anderson (women’s 4×400 meter relay) competed for the Bahamas
  • Genevieve LaCaze Gregson (300 meter women’s steeplechase) competed for Australia
  • Joseph Fahnbulleh (men’s 200 meters) competed for Liberia
  • Eddie Lovett (men’s 110 meter hurdles) competed for the U.S. Virgin Islands
  • Marija Vucenovic (women’s javelin throw) competed for Serbia
  • Hakim Sani Brown (men’s 200 meter) competed for Japan
  • Yanis David (men’s long jump) competed for France
  • Andres Arroyo (men’s 800 meters) competed for Puerto Rico
  • Lloydricia Cameron (women’s shot put) competed for Jamaica

All fourteen athletes represented their countries with distinction and made their school proud.

Gators Maintain Powerhouse Status with 2022 Championships

In June 2022, the University of Florida solidified its status as a track and field powerhouse when its men’s and women’s teams swept the podium at the NCAA Championships. They took home the top medal in both outdoor events. For the men’s team, this is the fifth outdoor title overall, and its third in the past seven years.

For the women’s team, this championship is especially sweet, as it represents its first outdoor title. The women’s team also won the indoor championship this year, making it the top track and field collegiate program in the country.

High-Quality Recruiting and Coaching Take Center Stage

One of the reasons Florida has been so successful in track and field is because of the high quality of athletes they are able to recruit. Another reason is the excellent coaching staff the Gators have assembled. Under head coach Mike Holloway, the Gators have developed into one of the top track and field programs in not only the country, but also the world.

Holloway took over as the head coach of the men’s track and field programs at the University of Florida in 2003. He eventually added the title of women’s head coach in 2008. Both programs have soared under his guidance.

As head coach, Holloway’s teams have achieved historic success: breaking or tying 11 collegiate records, with six of them still standing today. Holloway’s coaching profile has continued to rise. He was named the head coach for the 2020 US Men’s Track and Field Olympic Team, where he coached two of his collegiate athletes to medals, as well.

With such an elevated international profile, it’s no wonder that Holloway has been successful at recruiting top-level talent to his university program. And his success proves his coaching methods translate into competition victories.

What to Expect Next

The University of Florida track and field team shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. With its combination of top-notch recruiting, great coaching, and championship pedigree, the Gators are poised to remain a force on the national and international stage for many years to come.
